Tablesetting 101

Contemporary entertaining is much more relaxed than our parents used to do it. Even so, it is still helpful to know the proper way to set the table.

1. Start by drawing an imaginary vertical line through the center of the plate.

2. To the right of the line place glassware, cup and saucer, knives, and spoons.

3. To the left of the line place the following: bread and butter plate (with a small butter knife placed horizontally across the top of the plate), salad plate, napkin, and forks. Here's a good mnemonic if you need help remembering: "fork" and "left" are both four letters. So forks go on the left. "Knife" and "spoon" each have five letters. So knives, spoons, and glasses go on the right. And now that you know the rules, go ahead and break them!
